A hidden option will show up and you can disable or re-enable the HDD’s Sleep Mode. You can access this feature even if you don’t have a removable HDD plugged into the Wii U.
Some usb hdd have the auto sleep built into them. I know Western digital passport drives come with it enable on the drive, but have software on the drive to disable it. It should be run, to disable the auto sleep , before using the drive on a Wii U .
4/16/2015 · Basically you need to boot up the Wii U and go to settings. Once you’re there you need to select data management and press down on the D-Pad for half a second. Once you’ve done that press and hold the + and – buttons and keep holding them. You will then see the prompt to disable sleep on your Wii U external hard drive.

4/16/2015 · Nearly every Wii U game I have is digital and on an external hard drive. Not once have I ever had it go to sleep in game. What I would like is the option to not automatically spin up the hard drive when its checking for updates. I can hear that every time it happens. It’s annoyed me enough to unplug my Wii U .
