This is important because fuel vapors contain a variety of hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons form smog when they react with air and sunlight.

i went to smog and it fail the Fuel Evaporative Controls Functional . what can i do to fix this problem? replace the canister? EDIT: The fuel evaporative systems probably won’t fail furing the service life of the vehicle; however, if it does, the hoses or charcoal canister are usually to blame.

2/4/2017 · It was the Fuel Evaporative Controls Functional test that I bombed. The guy was nice enough to help me try and diagnose it by bypassing the evap canister entirely and it still ended up failing making us think that the leak is near or around the fuel tank itself.

Visually inspect the EVAP system by running the UV light across the vehicle’s underside, following the system’s path from the engine compartment to the rear fuel tank. Any smoke leaking from the system will illuminate in the ultraviolet light. Make sure to check the fuel cap; cap seal failures are very common on.
